No horizon, no figure, no centre: red, yellow, deep blue and a dark bottle-green burst across the canvas, crossed by fine black lines that seem drawn at speed. Kandinsky painted it in Munich in May 1914, and it is the last of his numbered Improvisations – the series of pictures he made between 1909 and 1914 and named, like music, for how they were made.
He had defined the term himself in On the Spiritual in Art (1911): an Improvisation is a largely unconscious, spontaneous expression of an inner state. Three months after this one he left Germany for Switzerland at the outbreak of war. The canvas later passed into a public collection.
What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the museum's own photograph of the painting. It is not a painting and is not sold as one.
Scale
Original: 120.3 × 110.3 cm — oil on canvas
- 50 × 50 cm / 19.7 × 19.7 in — reduced, 0.35× original. Image 42.00 × 38.21 cm.
- 70 × 70 cm / 27.6 × 27.6 in — reduced, 0.43× original. Image 51.41 × 46.76 cm.
Why this size. The canvas is 120 cm wide. The museum's photograph holds enough detail for 51.41 cm of image at 300 dpi, the floor we print to, so the large sheet reproduces it pixel for pixel at a little over two fifths of the painting's width, and the small sheet at about a third. On the large sheet that leaves wide white margins, 9.3 cm at the sides. We do not enlarge files artificially: an upscaled file adds detail Kandinsky never painted. A larger sheet would need a larger photograph, and when one exists we will print it.
The print
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks. White border, optical centre, with a small Museartis wordmark in the lower left margin. The colour of the museum's file is kept, not corrected. Unframed. Shipped rolled in a tube.
Provenance
Wassily Kandinsky (Russian, 1866–1944), Improvisation 35, 1914, oil on canvas.
Where this comes from
