Twelve squares, twelve rings, and no two alike. Kandinsky painted this sheet in Munich in 1913, while he was at work on the large abstract canvases, and it has become the best-known page of his working life — a test of what colour does when it is set beside another colour and nothing else is asked of it. The rings are drawn freehand, the squares do not quite line up, and the pleasure of the thing is that the hand keeps showing through the system.
What this is. A giclée print after the original watercolour, not an original and not a facsimile. It is printed to order on fine art paper: the sheet is new, the picture is old.
Scale. The original measures 23.9 × 31.5 cm. On the 40 × 30 cm sheet the picture prints 33.6 × 25.5 cm (1.07× the original, 423 dpi); on 50 × 40 cm it prints 42.0 × 31.9 cm (1.33×, 338 dpi).
The print. 200 gsm matte fine art paper, pigment inks, a generous white margin, unframed, shipped rolled in a triangular tube. The paper tone of the original is kept, not corrected.
