A deep crimson field fills the middle of the canvas, held between a yellow wedge on the right, a violet one on the left and a band of blue-green along the top. Over it float circles of every size – pale blue, apricot, yellow, ringed in black – crossed by thin arcs, with a chequered stair of yellow and orange blocks and a dark beam in the lower left. Kandinsky painted it in July 1924 in Weimar, in his third year as a teacher at the Bauhaus.
He called it Schweres Rot – Heavy Red – and wrote the title, the year and his catalogue number 276 on the back. Red, he had written in On the Spiritual in Art, carries an almost purposeful force; here it is the weight the whole picture rests on.
What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the museum's own photograph of the painting. It is not a painting and is not sold as one.
Scale
Original: 48.7 × 58.7 cm — oil on canvas
- 40 × 50 cm / 15.7 × 19.7 in — reduced, 0.69× original. Image 33.60 × 40.66 cm.
- 50 × 70 cm / 19.7 × 27.6 in — reduced, 0.79× original. Image 38.69 × 46.82 cm.
Why this size. The painting is 48.7 cm wide. The museum's photograph holds enough detail for 38.69 cm of image at 300 dpi, the floor we print to, so the large sheet reproduces it pixel for pixel at four fifths of its size, with a generous white border, and the small sheet at a little over two thirds. We do not enlarge files artificially: an upscaled file adds detail Kandinsky never painted, which is why there is no 1:1 sheet.
The print
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks. White border, optical centre, with a small Museartis wordmark in the lower left margin. The colour of the museum's file is kept, not corrected. Unframed. Shipped rolled in a tube.
Provenance
Wassily Kandinsky (Russian, 1866–1944), Schweres Rot (Heavy Red), 1924, oil on canvas.
Where this comes from
