Grey beams and blocks hang in front of a black disc, drawn in exact perspective yet resting on nothing; a broad diagonal band runs from the lower left out through the top right corner. El Lissitzky painted the composition around 1919 in Vitebsk, where he taught alongside Kazimir Malevich, and soon renamed it with the word he coined for these pictures: Proun – Pro Unovis, after the artists' group they had founded there.

The picture has hung both ways. A photograph of 1919 shows a version upright on the wall of his studio; the group's almanac printed it on its side in 1920. In 1974 his widow confirmed the landscape hanging that the museum follows.

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the museum's own photograph of the painting. It is not a painting and is not sold as one.

Scale
Original: 96.1 × 71.6 cm — oil on canvas on plywood

  • 70 × 50 cm / 27.6 × 19.7 in — reduced, 0.61× original. Image 58.80 × 43.65 cm.
  • 100 × 70 cm / 39.4 × 27.6 in — reduced, 0.85× original. Image 82.11 × 60.95 cm.

Why this size. The painting is 96 cm wide. The museum's photograph holds enough detail for 82.11 cm of image at 300 dpi, the floor we print to, so the large sheet reproduces it pixel for pixel at 85 % of the painting's width – a big picture, close to the presence of the original. The small sheet prints it at three fifths. We do not enlarge files artificially: an upscaled file adds detail Lissitzky never painted.

The print
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks. White border, optical centre, with a small Museartis wordmark in the lower left margin. The colour of the museum's file is kept, not corrected. Unframed. Shipped rolled in a tube.

Provenance
El Lissitzky (Russian, 1890–1941), Proun 1D, c. 1919, oil on canvas on plywood.

Where this comes from
The museum file, the measurements, and what we are allowed to sell: the record for this sheet.
