A figure strides to the left through a dark, slate-blue night: a small grey head, a big red body like a lantern, two black stick legs, and above it all a yellow umbrella, flat as a half moon, held on one long black handle. The outlines are drawn in thick black; under the thin blue watercolour the black ground shows through, brushy and uneven. Klee made it in Bern in 1939, the last full year of his life, in which he entered more than twelve hundred works in his catalogue.
This one is no. 868 of that year. Klee signed it lower left on the sheet and wrote the date and the title on the card below, spelling it with a mark over the n, as in old German handwriting: mit Soñenschirm.
What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the museum's own photograph of the sheet. It is not an original and is not sold as one.
Scale
Original: 19.5 × 36.6 cm — watercolour and pencil on black ground on paper
- 40 × 50 cm / 15.7 × 19.7 in — original size, 1:1. Image 19.65 × 36.54 cm.
- 50 × 70 cm / 19.7 × 27.6 in — enlarged, 1.45× original. Image 28.51 × 53.02 cm.
Why this size. The museum's photograph holds 435 dpi at original size, so the small sheet shows the picture exactly as large as Klee made it, with a wide white border. The large sheet enlarges it as far as the file carries at 300 dpi, the floor we print to: 1.45 times, pixel for pixel, nothing added. The image measures run to the outermost edge of Klee's sheet, which is cut by hand and a few millimetres narrower at the bottom than at the top.
Not available in the United States. Klee died in 1940, so the work is in the public domain in Switzerland, the European Union and the United Kingdom. In the United States a work first published after 1930 can stay protected for 95 years from publication, and we cannot rule that out for this one. We therefore do not ship this print to US addresses.
