A Sunday afternoon on an island in the Seine, just outside Paris: people of every age and class resting in the shade, a woman fishing, a couple in their Sunday best with a monkey on a leash, boats on the water. Up close the whole thing dissolves into small dots and dashes of pure colour laid side by side. Seurat worked on it for two years, came back to it to add figures, and later painted a border of dots around the edge. The border is in the museum's file and is printed too.

It was the sensation of the eighth and last Impressionist exhibition in May 1886. The Art Institute of Chicago holds it; it is the painting Cameron stares at in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the Art Institute of Chicago's own open-access photograph of the canvas. It is not a nineteenth-century painting and is not sold as one.
