A Paris crossroads in the rain, a short walk from Caillebotte's own house: wet cobbles, new apartment blocks cut to Haussmann's plan, a gas lamp standing dead centre, and a couple under one umbrella walking straight at you, glancing at something outside the frame. There are no raindrops anywhere. The rain is in the umbrellas and in the shine on the stones.

It is Caillebotte's largest and most ambitious painting, more than two and a half metres wide, and when the third Impressionist exhibition opened in April 1877 it was number one in the catalogue. The Art Institute of Chicago holds it, inscribed lower left «G. Caillebotte. 1877».

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the Art Institute of Chicago's own open-access photograph of the canvas. It is not a nineteenth-century painting and is not sold as one.
