Two stacks of wheat stand in a stubble field outside Monet's house at Giverny late on a summer afternoon, with a row of poplars and the roofs of the village behind them and the shadows laid blue across the ground. When Monet hung fifteen of these canvases together at Durand-Ruel's gallery in Paris in May 1891, this one was number one in the catalogue.

Durand-Ruel bought it during the show, sold it to a collector in Boston in June, took it back in August in exchange for another Monet, and sold it the same day to Potter Palmer of Chicago. The Art Institute of Chicago holds it, inscribed lower left «Claude Monet 91».

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the Art Institute of Chicago's own open-access photograph of the canvas. It is not a nineteenth-century painting and is not sold as one.
