Five women sit side by side on a green bench in strict profile, their hands raised in small, deliberate gestures, while figures cross a pale square behind them under blue tree trunks. Gauguin painted the canvas in 1892, during his first stay in Tahiti, and lettered its title, TA MATETE – the market – straight into the paint at the lower left.
The frieze-like order is borrowed: he kept a photograph of an Egyptian tomb painting from Thebes and moved its seated figures and raised hands into a Tahitian scene. He painted on coarse jute, and its weave shows through the colour everywhere; the print keeps it.
What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the museum's own photograph of the painting. It is not a painting and is not sold as one.
Scale
Original: 91.5 × 73.2 cm — oil on jute
- 50 × 40 cm / 19.7 × 15.7 in — reduced, 0.46× original. Image 42.00 × 33.36 cm.
- 70 × 50 cm / 27.6 × 19.7 in — reduced, 0.56× original. Image 51.26 × 40.71 cm.
Why this size. The canvas is 91.5 cm wide. The museum's photograph holds enough detail for 51.26 cm of image at 300 dpi, the floor we print to, so the large sheet reproduces it pixel for pixel at a little over half the width of the painting, and the small sheet at just under half. On the large sheet that leaves wider white margins at the sides than usual, 9.4 cm each. We do not enlarge files artificially: an upscaled file adds detail Gauguin never painted. A larger sheet would need a larger photograph, and when one exists we will print it.
The print
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks. White border, optical centre, with a small Museartis wordmark in the lower left margin. The colour of the museum's file is kept, not corrected. Unframed. Shipped rolled in a tube.
Provenance
Paul Gauguin (French, 1848–1903), Ta matete (The Market), 1892, oil on jute.
Where this comes from
