Red and black wool in stepped diamonds, row on row, with a small spark of green where the blocks meet. It is the most graphic sheet of the series — close to a modern abstract, and made a century before one.
The pattern is Log Cabin in its Courthouse Steps variation: every block is built from narrow strips laid around a small centre square, light on two sides and dark on the other two.
What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from a photograph of the quilt. It is not a textile and is not sold as one — the quilt itself, wool, pieced and quilted in New York between 1850 and 1890, is in a museum.
Scale
Original: 200.7 × 130.2 cm / 79 × 51 1/4 in — wool quilt
40 × 50 cm / 15.7 × 19.7 in — reduced about 1:4.6. Image 28.2 × 44.0 cm.
Why this size
The quilt is two metres tall. At this size the whole quilt stays on one sheet, edge to edge, printed from the museum’s high-resolution photograph and not enlarged.
Provenance
New York, “Log Cabin” Quilt, “Courthouse Steps” Variation, c. 1850–90; wool, pieced and quilted.
Where this comes from
The museum file, the measurements, and what we are allowed to sell: the record for this sheet.
The frame
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks, white border. Slim black aluminium frame, glazed with clear plexiglass instead of glass, so it travels safely.
