A great star of hundreds of small diamonds opens from the centre of this quilt, ring after ring of red, green and black, set in a garden of cut-out chintz flowers and birds. On the wall it reads first as geometry — a sunburst — and only up close as needlework.
It was made on Staten Island in the 1830s by Mary “Betsy” Totten. The whole top is organised around one single star, built outward from the centre diamond by diamond.
What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from a photograph of the quilt. It is not a textile and is not sold as one — the quilt itself, cotton, pieced, appliquéd and quilted by hand, is in a museum.
Scale
Original: 239 × 244 cm / 94 × 96 in — cotton quilt
40 × 50 cm / 15.7 × 19.7 in — reduced about 1:7. Image 34.0 × 33.6 cm.
Why this size
The quilt is well over two metres across. At this size the whole star and its flowered border stay in view on one sheet, printed from the museum’s high-resolution photograph and not enlarged.
Provenance
Mary “Betsy” Totten, Rising Sun Quilt, Staten Island, New York, 1830s; cotton, pieced, appliquéd and quilted.
Where this comes from
