A bed of chrysanthemums seen from above, with no sky, no path and no edge: pink, white, rust-red and yellow blooms crowd the whole canvas against a dark blue-green ground. Monet painted it in 1897, most likely that autumn, as one of four chrysanthemum canvases he showed together at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in June 1898.

Reviewing that show, the critic Gustave Geffroy wrote of an «effet de tapisserie»: the flowers are laid flat across the surface like a woven hanging, not set in a garden you could walk into. In 2022 the Musée de l'Orangerie placed this canvas among the sources of Monet's water-lily decorations, in its exhibition «Le décor impressionniste».

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the Kunstmuseum Basel's own photograph of the painting. It is not a painting and is not sold as one.

Why this size. The canvas is a metre wide. The museum's photograph holds enough detail for 54.66 cm of image at 300 dpi, the floor we print to, so the large sheet reproduces it pixel for pixel at a little over half the width of the painting, and the small sheet at about two fifths. We do not enlarge files artificially: an upscaled file adds detail Monet never painted. A larger sheet would need a larger photograph, and when one exists we will print it.

The print
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks. White border, optical centre. The colour of the museum's file is kept, not corrected. Unframed. Shipped rolled in a tube.
