Which impression, and why this one
Every impression is a separate pull from the blocks, printed in a different year and faded differently — and on this design the first thing to go is the pink of the dawn sky behind Fuji. We print Chicago's impression rather than the Metropolitan's for exactly that reason: the Met sheet has lost its dawn. Chicago's digitisation is also about two and a half times larger in each dimension, which is why every size on this listing is backed natively.
What we measured
The printed block runs 7820 × 5344 px in the museum's file, a ratio of 1.4633 against the catalogued 1.4803 — the difference is the width of a hand-trimmed edge. The scale is anchored on the catalogued sheet height of 25.4 cm. Both print files are built at a flat 300 dpi, the most matte fine art paper resolves; nothing is enlarged in software.
What we are allowed to sell
The work. Hokusai died in 1849 and the series was published in the 1830s: public domain in Switzerland, the EU, the UK and the United States alike.
The photograph. The Art Institute of Chicago publishes images of public-domain works under Creative Commons Zero, for any purpose including commercial use. The file came from the museum's own endpoint, not from an aggregator.
What we do not claim. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks. Not a woodblock print, and not sold as one.

- If you mat it
- Go one frame size up and cut the window three millimetres inside the printed image on every side. Do not trim the sheet.
Please measure before you buy or cut. These figures describe the file we print from. Sheets are cut by machine to about a millimetre and frames vary between makers. We replace a print that arrives damaged or wrong; we cannot replace a frame or mat that turns out not to fit.
