A young man in a patterned robe holds a long-stemmed pipe in his left hand and looks up. Above him, in a fan-shaped opening, is the reason the sheet is called Sumida River: snow falling over the water, the bank white under bare trees with a roof among them, and a single boat being poled across. Behind him the ground is a deep, flat blue.

Two hands made it. Kunisada drew the figure — he was the most sought-after portraitist of the late Edo period and by 1862 an old man. Hiroshige II drew the winter landscape in the fan. The sheet belongs to the series «Famous Places of the Eastern Capital in the Four Seasons», in which the figure carries the season and the cartouche carries the place. It is the companion to Takanawa in Winter, from the same series and the same year.

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the Rijksmuseum’s own open-access photograph of the woodblock print. It is not a woodblock print and is not sold as one.

The print
Giclée on 200 gsm FSC-certified fine art paper, twelve pigment inks. White border, centred on the sheet. The colour of the museum’s file is kept, not corrected. Unframed. Shipped rolled in a tube.
