A carpenter bee with rust-red wings hangs over a passionflower, and three more bees — two of them metallic green and gold — work the same tangle of petals and tendrils. The plate was cut in wood and coloured by hand for a French natural-history serial of 1878, and the four insects are named in the margin in the Latin of the day: Xylocopa morio, Chrysantheda frontalis, Euglossa Romandi, Centris denudans.

What this is — A giclée reproduction of a hand-coloured wood engraving, printed on fine art paper. It is not an original print, and it is not sold as one. The paper tone of the original is kept, not corrected.

Scale — The original leaf measures 21.0 × 26.6 cm. We print it larger: the picture is 30 × 42 cm on the 40 × 50 sheet and 40 × 56 cm on the 50 × 70 sheet, both drawn from an 850 ppi capture made for us by the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives.

The print — 200 gsm matte fine art paper, pigment inks, a white margin on all four sides, unframed, shipped rolled.
