Two pine trunks stand hard against the frozen shore at Nordstrand, south of Kristiania, and everything behind them — the dark band of the fjord, the white shelf of snow, the grey of the far bank — is laid down in long horizontal strokes that keep the eye travelling sideways.

Munch painted it on unprimed cardboard, not canvas, and left the support bare in places: the brown board shows through the snow and through the sky, which is why the winter light here reads warm rather than blue.

What this is. A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the SMK’s own open-access photograph of the painting. It is not a painting and is not sold as one.
