It went to the New York house that October and to Potter Palmer of Chicago on 29 February 1892 for $1,300. The Palmer family gave it to the Art Institute in 1922 — thirty-one years from the easel to a museum wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat the colour actually does.\u003c\/strong\u003e Measured on the museum's own file: almost the entire canvas is coloured rather than grey, and the colour splits three ways — two fifths blue, a third violet, a quarter warm. That is the picture's argument in numbers. Snow that is blue and lilac, a sky that is orange, and the stack sitting dark between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat this is.\u003c\/strong\u003e A giclée reproduction printed with pigment inks from the Art Institute of Chicago's own open-access photograph of the canvas. On the large sheet that works out at exactly 300 dpi for an image 51.06 cm wide — our floor, to the pixel. Anything wider would mean upscaling, so there is no third size. On the small sheet the same file carries 365 dpi.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOn the borders.\u003c\/strong\u003e The canvas is half as wide again as it is tall, so the sheet cannot follow its shape. On the small sheet the image takes the house width, 84 % of the sheet, which leaves 4.00 cm at each side and the deeper margins above and below: 5.99 and 6.87 cm. On the large sheet the file sets the width rather than the sheet, so the sides run wider than usual at 9.47 cm, against 7.92 above and 9.10 below.
